If you are having problems getting Vertex to run on your system, please
read below:
FILE ERRORS:
I've heard some people are having problems with some
Lightwave files crashing the machine. Of the 20 or so
Lightwave files I have, they all load fine. If someone could
send me one of these files, I'm sure I can fix the problem,
but I can't fix what ain't broken!
2.0 COMPATABILITY:
I've heard someone has a problem running on 2.04. I've run the
program myself on 2.04 with no problems, but I do know that just
2.0 (not the 2.04 update) does not like Vertex. If you press the
right mouse button and a pop-up menu appears, then the machine
crashes, this is probably the 2.0 problem. As a solution, you can
run in 1.3, but as far as I know the program works in 2.04. If
anyone has experiences to the contrary, please let me know.
WIERD FUNCTION RESULTS:
If you are useing lightwave objects, it's best to do a "delete
duplicate edges" after loading, to help clean up the object. Sometimes
there are extraneous edges created during the conversion process.
Check the Euler number on the info panel (in white marked EULR:) - if
the absolute value of this number is high, it's a good chance you have
some duplicate edges in your object.
If the new planar fill routine is not filling your object correctly,
or if you get edges leading to the upper left and connected to
nothing, then try these steps:
1. Try filling smaller parts of you shape which are not as
complicated.
2. If you do this, then you should ensure your shape is
continuous - that is, all the vertices are connected to 2
other vertices, and there are no holes in the outile you are
trying to fill. This can usually be accomplished by adding
1 or 2 edges at the ends.
If bevels don't seem to be working, make sure your original shape has
faces in it, and try flushing out the duplicate edges and faces
by deleting them using the Delete menu options. Also, this
function will only bevel a flat shape by extruding it. It will
not bevel an already extruded shape. A quick fix would be to
delete half the object from the side view, or just attempt a
bevel on the front or back half of the object (as seen from the
FRONT view)
USING THE MENUS:
Since about half the people who have tried Vertex have expressed an
extreme dislike for the pop-up menus, I thought I'd go through their
operation one more time.
Pressing the right mouse button anywhere on the screen will cause a
pop-up menu to appear. You do not have to hold the right mouse button
down - a menu will disappear when you move the mouse pointer off of
it.
Make selections by clicking with the left mouse button on your choice.
For most menus, this will cause another pop-up menu to appear. Again,
there is no need to hold any buttons down, moving off the menu will
make it go away.
I would strongly suggest getting a handle on the FastKeys. When I
want to select vertices, I don't mess with the menu. I just type an S
then an R. Now I have the pick pointer, and I can immediately start
selecting vertices.
Version 1.36.1 and above offer the traditional pull down menus.
People who like and use the pop-up menus can go on using the
software the same way.
INIT ERRORS:
Error 73 is is a sure fire sign you're low on memory.
Error 8 is an internal error. No-one should be seeing this error any
more. If you are, please let me know as soon as possible.
RUN TIME ERRORS:
Error 0 is a division by 0 error. I've tried to detect these be-
fore they happen.
I have tried to make many of the functions "stable" by first checking
to see if there is enough memory available. It is kind of difficult
for me to fully test these types of things, since I only have a 2 meg
machine. Be leary of error 8, which is the out of internal memory
error. When this happens, you are trying to operate on too many
vertices at once. Let me know when you run into this error, and I
should ba able to alter the code a bit to fit any special
circumstance.
UNKNOWN RUN TIME ERRORS:
Please let me know when you run into these errors. Include a brief
description of your system set-up, and what you did before the
error occured.
If the UNKNOWN ERROR requestor will not go away, you may
have to re-boot the machine. When errors occur, the system
will abort any function and try to re-draw the screen. If the
error occurred during a screen re-draw, then an infinite loop
of errors will continuously appear. This should no longer
happen, unless you have objects of extreme size (say millions
of units in size.)
